Car Rentals
How to get the best car rental deal
Do I Need a Car?
Generally, yes as the Maui bus system is very limited and taxi's are expensive. Paid shuttles do run from the airport to your vacation rental, but at $70.00+ each way. You will need a car to get to most of Maui's attractions and activities.
When should I book the car?
As soon as you have made your reservation you should book a cancelable reservation with one of the major in airport rental companies (Alamo, Avis, Budget, Dollar Enterprises, Hertz, National or Thrifty). Particularly in summer and winter you should book right away to guarantee you will have a car. Use kayak.com or carrentals.com to find the best deal here.
How do I get a better price?
a) Try these links for a better price, and the money goes straight in the hands of locals:
b) Costco and Sam's Club members should go in through their respective websites and search for car rentals.
c) If you are totally familiar with how Priceline works, try it. If you do not already understand all of it's good and bad points do not use it.
d) Check with your insurance company and/or credit card company to see if they insure the car rental. If so you can turn down the expensive extra insurance.
e) Avoid the “prepaid” fuel option. You will always have some fuel left in the tank when you return the car which they just sold you. Also, there are several gas stations on the main road to the airport to fuel up.
